Time to visit one of the Canary Islands: Lanzarote
The volcanic pearl Lanzarote belongs to the archipelago of the Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most important European and Spanish holiday destinations. Because yes, it belongs to Spain, even though the islands are located west of Morocco. Today it is all about one Canary Island! Discover the best things to do in Lanzarote.
Jameos del Agua
In the north of the island, the Jameos del Agua are located; magical caves discovered by the artist César Manrique. He changed this unique natural miracle into one of the best sights of Lanzarote where harmony between nature and art is most important. And it was his first tourist attraction he brought to life.
Within the caves there is a beautiful lagoon with incredibly clear water. What makes it even more unique are the many white crabs that live here because of landslides. In addition, there is a restaurant and a swimming pool. César has done a lot to emphasise the natural beauty of this magical place.
Mirador del Rio
This place is seen as the most beautiful overlook of Lanzarote. You can find it on the northern part of the island. The building from where you have a view of Graciosa Island – a volcanic island in the Canary Islands – is also designed by César Manrique. The place is built on a cliff and has a height of 475 meters. Beautiful right?!
Timanfaya National Park
One of the most important visits you can make when enjoying your holidays on Lanzarote. In Timanfaya National Park you can admire the landscape which is created by the volcanic eruption in 1730. The park is also known as “Montañas del fuego”, the Fire Mountains, because the ground is still very warm. Make your visit even more fun on the back of a dromedary, perfect for families!
El lago verde
South from the Timanfaya National Park you will find a black beach with a green lagoon called “El lago verde”, The Green Lake. The green lagoon is caused by algae and volcanic minerals which make it a very unique place to visit.
Los Hervideros
Los Hervideros might remind you of the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland, only less green. The Hervideros Cliffs are located on the southwestern coast of the island. The water is clashing to the Cliffs and the caves created by the rough water make the sounds even louder. The name Los Hervideros translates to the “boiling pots”. When you make a road trip through Lanzarote, you can easily reach the cliffs and admire the stunning road leading to it.
Papagayo beaches
Of course we cannot forget the incredible beaches Lanzarote has. In the Los Ajaches Natural Park, you will find an amazing collection of pristine beaches called Playas de Papagayo. The beaches are well-known, especially among the Spaniards. The people love the Papagayo beaches because they are surrounded by calm waters with an amazing turquoise colour. Moreover, they are sheltered by cliffs which makes them very intimate. It is the perfect place to relax and take a dip in the clear waters while enjoying the surrounding nature.
