Our favourite beaches on the Costa Dorada
Cala Forn (l’Ametlla de Mar)
It’s a certified Blue Flag Beach, which means clean water and sand and a safe environment, making it the perfect beach when traveling with kids. And it is beautiful, so beautiful that it can be compared to any cove in Menorca. Moreover, it is surrounded by smaller beaches on which you can take a walk and find hidden treasures (the main beach is quite popular and there might be lots of tourists at the height of the season)
Cala Fonda, aka Waikiki (Tarragona)
Considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches of the south of Catalonia, also called Waikiki for its resemblance to the famous hawaiian beach. It is a difficult place to access as it is surrounded by the leafy forest of the Marquesa that was left unspoilt despite the urban development of the area. To get there you’ll need to park your car in the nearby campsite then walk for about 20 minutes through the forest.
You won’t find anything there, no showers or cafés: it’s a purely natural place. However you will find 200 meters of clear water, golden sand and flourishing vegetation. Do you know what most people do there ? They coat their skin with a special mask made out the cove’s wet sand, it’s apparently very good for your skin !
This beach is a popular naturist site but you can find all kinds of people there, the only rule is to respect each other’s privacy and tranquility.

It is usually busy since it’s one of the most popular beaches of the area but it is worth the pain of coming early in the morning. It is a certified Blue Flag Beach since 1988 and offers beautiful golden sand and calm water. You can rent hammocks or beach umbrellas and have access to showers and restrooms. You can also try out all kinds of nautic sports there.
Playa de Tamarit
We reckon it is one of the best beaches of the Costa Dorada. It’s gets its beauty from its amazing vue of the Tamarit castle and its natural environment as it is surrounded by leafy vegetation. It is right next to the natural reserve of the Gaia Delta river, known for its willow trees, black poplars and reeds. It is also an area known for the many bird species that one is likely to see there.
The Tamarit beach is quite big (1,750m long for 45m wide). Moreover, it is always clean, all kinds of services are available there, you will also find many restaurants and bars nearby and be able to rent a boat or try out watersports. What more could you ask for ?
This beach is suited for people with reduced mobility, it is very easy to access and also offers floating wheelchairs.
Cala Jovera (Tamarit)
Tamarit Beach is on one side of the Tamarit Castle but on the other side there’s Cala Jovera. It is also known as Cala del Castell, the Castle cove. It is a very charming place: a beautiful unspoilt cove surrounded with pine trees. It’s about 90 meters long. It is not difficult to access, you’ll just have to park walk for a few minutes.
You won’t find any services there: no showers, no bathrooms, not even bins. You also won’t find any lifeguard or infirmary services. It is usually less busy, which makes it a great place to relax and spend some quality time with your partner. Cala Jovera, Cala Fonda, y Roca Plana received the “unspoilt beaches of the Tarragona coast” award.
Playa de Creixell
This certified Blue Flag beach is almost 2 km long is located in Creixell, a very touristic place of Tarragona. It is usually quite busy at the height of the season and is more suited for families. Indeed, its thin sand and clear waters makes it the perfect place to enjoy a beach day with kids.
This place is still a protected natural area even though many services are available there such as showers, bins, hommocks and beach umbrellas… Also, The Catalunian ecologists Foundation lists this beach as one of the places “that stays natural and protects the environment”
Playa del Torn (Hospitalet de L’Infant)
It’s one of Europe’s biggest naturist beach thanks to its 2,000 m of landscapes. It’s the perfect combination of deep green pine trees, golden sand and clear blue water. For those who enjoy naturism Torn Beach is a perfectly calm and kids-free place. It’s about 3km south of the Hospitalet de l’infant port.
