The summer holidays are getting closer and we are starting to think about our next destination. A turquoise and crystalline sea, beaches surrounded by vegetation, picturesque villages where to eat in front of the sea… Who has not dreamed of something like that on a vacation? Well, all this and much more is what you can do in this region if you visit the beaches of the Costa Brava.
One third of the province of Girona is classified as of Natural Interest. Among them are its magnificent swimming areas: this paradise offers us more than 200 kilometres Mediterranean beaches, from Blanes to Portbou, in France. Today we are going to cross it from north to south in order to get to know the best beaches in the area. Let’s immerse ourselves in the Costa Brava!
The best coves and beaches of the Costa Brava
What do they have that make the beaches of the Costa Brava so special? For starters, the sea has an intense turquoise colour, its waters are crystal clear and you’ll be surprised by the beauty of the seabed. Many of them are hidden, surrounded by abundant vegetation and with much more complicated access than we are used to; this makes them retain their wildest character. Let’s see the beaches you can visit for your next holidays.
Aiguablava Beach (Begur)
One of the best known beaches of the Costa Brava is Aiguablava Beach, in the beautiful town of Begur. If you visit it during the summer months, you will see traffic jams at the entrance due to the large influx of tourists. But it will definitely be worth the wait. Turquoise and calm waters bathe the shore and you can sunbathe on its fine and clear sand. It seems to be a virgin beach but it has different and complete services. It will be hard to resist taking the diving goggles and fins and discover the seabed.
Enjoy Aiguablava Beach while staying in your holiday homes in Begur
Portaló Beach (Cadaqués)
If you are staying in the north of the Costa Brava, do not forget to visit the Cap de Creus. As you know, it is the easternmost point of Spain, where you can enjoy beautiful scenery and excellent coves. One of our favourites is Cala Portaló, only 30 metres wide and without services for its visitors, but with a natural environment that will make you feel like being in paradise. If you are going to book an apartment in Cadaqués during your holiday, we recommend that it will be your reference bathroom area. The tranquillity and relaxation will be guaranteed.
Portixol Beach (Empuriabrava)
Empuriabrava is one of the most beautiful towns of the Costa Brava and we advise you to stay here during your holidays because you will definitely love it! It has a network of channels in a Venetian style and with beautiful beaches and nearby coves, such as Portixol Beach. Formerly this town was the port of the town of Empuries, of great importance since being one of the main accesses of southern Europe. So, in addition to being a beautiful bathing area because of the natural environment that surrounds it, it has centuries of history. We also encourage you to get to know the surroundings; you can go to the viewpoint or go along the Paseo Marítimo. But if you have enough energy, here there is a link to our list of the 9 most beautiful town of costa Brava.
Calau Beach (Calella de Palafrugell)
One of the most charming towns on the Costa Brava is Calella de Palafrugell. On its coast you will find 8 coves almost following one another. One of our favourites is the Playa d’en Calau because, along it, we find the old houses of the fishing village, nowadays converted into hotels, shops… A perfect place to spend the day diving in its waters, enjoying the good temperatures and tasting the gastronomy of the area in any restaurant on the beach.
Pola Beach (Tossa de Mar)
If you are going to rent an apartment in Tossa de Mar, one of the coves that we recommend you to visit is Pola Beach (Cala Pola). It is a small place but it has the perfect dimensions so you would like to stay here the whole day. It is accessed by stone stairs and from above you will want to throw yourself into its turquoise waters, it looks like a saltwater pool!
Canyet Beach (Sant Feliu de Guíxols)
If you go by the zigzag road that connects Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Tossa de Mar, more or less halfway, you will reach Canyet Beach (Cala Canyet). It is inside an urbanisation and there are several swimming areas where you can swim, dive or play with the whole family. It is ideal to spend the day because, after eating, it begins to give shades due to the rocky walls that surround it and, in addition, it has some footbridges that extend over the sea. There is parking, restaurants and a snack bar; everything you need for a day of sun and beach.
La Boadella Beach (Lloret de Mar)
And we finish this route along the beaches of the Costa Brava in one of the southernmost areas: Lloret de Mar. It is one of the most tourist destinations in Spain, so it is difficult to find a little crowded bathing area. The ideal is to go to the beach the closest to the centre, that’s why one of our favourites is Playa de la Boadella. It is located between this town and Blanes and invites bathers to spend a day of sun and heat surrounded by nature and can enjoy a clear and crystal clear sea.
